About Us

Come celebrate Saturday mornings with us at the Lion’s Head Farmers’ Market. The market operates Saturday mornings from 9 AM to 12 PM from Victoria Day weekend to Thanksgiving weekend. Enjoy food, festivities and our beautiful beach venue at the Lion’s Head Beach Pavilion. Sample our local food and craft vendors to see what each week offers.

The Lion’s Head Farmers’ Market began in 2008, under the leadership of Megan Myles. It was inspired by a school project for a world issues class at Bruce Peninsula District School (BPDS) in Lion’s Head.  Recognizing the perils of the globalized food system, particularly in relation to inequitable distribution, environmental degradation, and human health impacts, sustainable agricultural practices and local food production seemed to offer a much-need solution.

As the first phase of the project, Brittany Tackaberry, Jenelle Hellyer, Kate Sarnovsky and Megan Myles created a community garden at Golden Dawn Senior Citizens’ Home in Lion’s Head. The garden  provided apartment tenants the opportunity to eat fresh, organic produce as well as enjoy the recreational benefits of gardening. The garden was a beautiful oasis for the senior citizens and it has helped strengthen the sense of community at Golden Dawn. Further, the students documented the project through film and shared the resulting feature at the Bruce Peninsula Environmental Film Festival and at local churches.

While the garden addressed the production of local food, the second phase endeavoured to address its distribution on a community level. As part of the Megan’s final assessment for the World Issues course, she analyzed the positive and negative effects of globalization and suggested sustainable solutions for living within a “global village”. One such suggestion was to increase the production and consumption of local products, especially food. It became evident that the area would benefit from a local farmers’  market where local and seasonal residents could support local food producers.

With much support from teachers, the Bruce Peninsula Environment Group, and the community, the Lion’s Head Farmers’ Market began. The opening day of the market was Saturday, June 21, 2008. Despite slow beginnings, the market committee proceeded with plans to make the market a permanent fixture in the community.

Cecile and Megan Myles serve as the market managers, with much appreciated support from Judy Jasper and Christina Chladny. However, all vendors contribute their ideas and participate in the decision making process.

  1. Do you know the name of a contact person for the community garden on Main Street at the north end of town?
